Internet start-up Ekkeko Groovy Industries (http://www.ekkeko.com) is betting that its new classified ad system is the long-awaited peer-to-peer "Killer App." The company has released EKKEKO, a free program that allows sellers to create advertisements for goods or services and buyers to find anything from collectibles to real estate. The system improves on traditional classified ad or auction sites because the advertisements remain on the sellers’ computers and are viewed by potential buyers using peer-to-peer technology.

EKKEKO has been called "a cross between eBay and Napster." Company president Kell Warshaw agrees: "By adopting a P2P architecture similar to the original Napster, we have been able to free classified ads from the costs and restrictions of conventional services like eBay. EKKEKO users can include unlimited content in their advertisements and post hundreds of listings at no charge."

The elimination of fees and commissions is not the only advantage EKKEKO offers. Because they remain on the seller’s computer, ads can be easily managed or modified. Sellers can include multiple pictures, audio, video, or attached documents in their advertisements. As with newspaper classifieds, there is no middleman; buyers and sellers communicate directly by phone, fax, email, or through the built-in instant messaging system.

Most important of all, EKKEKO is exceedingly simple and user-friendly. Creating an ad takes a few minutes with the step-by-step wizard, and downloading a typical ad for viewing is nearly instantaneous. EKKEKO is the perfect tool for selling that pair of skates you have in the attic or finding the final hockey card to complete your collection. "It takes advantage of the entrepreneurial spirit of our customers," adds Warshaw, "This is the application that P2P has been waiting for."
